2012 Military Bowl

For decades, Washington DC football fans watched bowl game after bowl game, played all across the country. Eventually, a couple fans decided the nation's capital deserved its own game too, and set out to make it happen. They did their homework, leveraged the government, and put together a committee. Then, they garnered support from the Army, Navy, and the NCAA. Next thing you know, the brand new bowl game was picked up by ESPN. That was in 2008, when it was known as the EagleBank Bowl. Now, the Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman gets its name from its new title sponsor, and celebrates its 5th year on December 27th, 2012.

Military Bowl tickets are available to active-duty military and their families at local USO centers, close to game day. The National Christmas Tree is a true US tradition, since 1923. The current tree is a Colorado blue spruce, transplanted to the grassy Ellipse south of the White House in 1978. This year, the lighting ceremony is Thursday, December 6th, at 5pm. Afterward, the tree is lit nightly from dusk until 11pm on January 1st. Thanksgiving Parades

Unfortunately, there isn't an official Washington DC Thanksgiving parade, but there are a couple before and after Turkey Day! In fact, no Washington DC Thanksgiving is complete without the Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade, in the heart of nearby Silver Spring, just 5 miles from American Inn of Bethesda. Every year, 50-foot balloons, floats, marching bands, musicians, costumed performers, fire trucks, and more fill the streets, not to mention an appearance from Santa himself! This year's parade starts at 10am on Saturday, November 17th, at the intersection of Ellsworth Drive and Veteran's Place in downtown Silver Spring, then heads south on Georgia Avenue. Driving on parade day is tricky, so it's best to take the Metro to Silver Spring Station.

Another lovely option for Thanksgiving in Maryland is the Reston Town Center Holiday Parade, a 20-mile drive from American Inn of Bethesda. This year features a full day of family fun on Friday, November 23rd, starting at 8am with the Ginger Man Mile race. After that, the parade starts at 11am, complete with massive balloons, colorful floats, fun characters, music, performers, and a visit from Santa. All in all, there will be more than 70 groups and 500 people participating, so come on down!

Scenic McCrillis Gardens and Brookside Gardens in Bethesda

Taking a walk through a beautiful garden has been known to work wonders for alleviating stress, fatigue, and even bad moods. Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, Maryland near Bethesda is a breathtaking public garden. Its 50 acres is located in Wheaton Regional Park, part of Montgomery County’s park system. Open from sunrise to sunset year round, there’s also a Visitors Center on site and Conservatories, which are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The gardens within Brookside attract native butterflies and other pollinators like bees, adding to the magical cycles of nature. Another incomparable garden in Montgomery County is McCrillis Gardens in Bethesda. These gardens are actually under the management of Brookside Gardens, and William and Virginia McCrillis donated the land in 1978 to the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. Shade plants are the focus here, with ornamental trees and shrubs that tend to flower longer than average. A charming pavilion is a sweet spot for a picnic. McCrillis Gardens is also home to the Brookside Gardens School of Botanical Art and Illustration. Walter Reed National Military Medical Center

Since 2011 Walter Reed National Military Medical Center has been providing care for United States servicemen and women as well as their families. Located in Bethesda, Maryland, Walter Reed is the result of the consolidation of the National Naval Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center. It is housed on the renovated campus of the former Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The Ratner Museum

Surround yourself in art and splendor with a visit to a unique Bethesda, Maryland museum. The Dennis and Phillip Ratner Museum focuses on Judeo-Christian history. Through its permanent collections and exhibits, the Ratner Museum presents a deeper understanding of the ways that religion has influenced the philosophies, politics, and, most of all, spirituality of today’s modern societies. The permanent collection includes the artwork of Phillip Ratner, who is an internationally renowned sculptor. There are also ongoing exhibits that change each month, some featuring emerging artists working in a variety of media including photography, painting, and fiber art.
The Ratner Museum campus includes three buildings and several galleries, each with a theme. These include Genesis, Song of Songs, Heroes & Heroines, and Exodus. There are also three new galleries, including one on Alice in Wonderland, which combines enchanting sculptures and captivating drawings of the beloved story. A whimsical feature of the Ratner Museum is the section on Children’s Literature in Art. Get around downtown Bethesda without having to worry about where to stash your car with the Bethesda Circulator. The Bethesda Circulator is a free shuttle bus that runs every day except Sundays close to several parking lots as well as the Metro station. The route goes in a circuit from the corner of Bethesda Avenue and Woodmont Avenue, over to Arlington Road, right on Edgemoor Lane, and then crossing back on Old Georgetown Road. After that, it takes a left on Auburn Avenue and then back down Woodmont Avenue to begin the circuit again.
The Bethesda Circulator buses are roomy, quiet and clean, and—we’ll say it again—free! Enjoy getting around downtown—to shops, restaurants, theatres, and more—with convenience and ease. Don’t worry about the hassle of downtown parking or, heaven forbid, getting a parking ticket. Just leave that stress behind and hop on board. 2012 National Cherry Blossom Festival Washington DC

In 1912, the city of Tokyo, Japan gave a gift of 3,000 cherry blossom trees to Washington, D.C. Each year, America’s capital celebrates this gift, along with the arrival of spring, via the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Normally a two-week celebration, the upcoming festival will mark the 100th anniversary with a spectacular five-week event, which will take place from March 20 to April 27, 2012.

One of the highlights will be the opening ceremony on March 25 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Pre-show activities run from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and include musicians, a collection of cultural exhibits, and inspiring historical imagery. The ceremony, which begins at 5:00 p.m., will feature local officials, international dignitaries, and many well-known performers. Open to the public, the opening ceremony is free.
