Each year on November 11, Veterans Day is celebrated to honor those who served in our country's military. The 11th was chosen as the date of the holiday because of the armistice that ended World War I, which went into effect at 11 AM on November 11, 1918 – the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year. In 1954, the name of the day was changed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day and has remained that way ever since. Here are some of our favorite local happenings for the holiday in 2017: Dumbarton United Methodist Church Presents LaChanze: Feeling Good LaChanze is the stage name of Tony Award-winning actress Rhonda Sapp, who is known for her showstopping performance as Celie in The Color Purple and acclaimed roles in other major Broadway productions. At the Dumbarton Church in Georgetown, she will be performing original material as well as some highlights from her stage shows. Tickets are available on the official Dumbarton website. Let Freedom Ring! The Heart of Maryland Chorus will be presenting a traditional USO-style performance on Saturday, November 11 to honor both veterans and active duty military. This women's chorus will be singing barbershop-style tunes with special guests including other quartets, brass ensembles, and much more. The show takes place at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre in Rockville – tickets are on sale now. Veterans Day Tour at the Silver Spring Medical Museum The National Museum of Health and Medicine will open its doors to guests interested in learning about changes in American medicine over the last century and a half, with a particular emphasis on military medicine. The tour is led by a docent, takes place on November 11 at 1 PM, and is completely free to the public, though reservations are suggested. Check out the official event website for more info.
