Memorial Day 2017: Honoring the Fallen in Bethesda

Since 1868, the last Monday of May has been dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who gave their lives while serving in the U.S. military. Besides its significance as a federal holiday, Memorial Day is also accepted as the beginning of the summer season.

There are always many exciting things going on in Bethesda and D.C. during Memorial Day weekend. Whether you’re a resident or just in town on vacation, the below events are a sure bet for a good time the weekend before May 29.

38th Annual 2017 Potomac Memorial Tournament

Each year the Potomac Soccer Association hosts a popular youth tournament that attracts hundreds of teams from all over the continent. This year’s venue is the SoccerPlex in Germantown; there are divisions for ages ranging from U9 to U19. Tournament matches begin Friday, May 27 and run through Sunday, with the finals held on Monday morning. The event is not only a popular place for college scouts to identify up-and-coming talent, it’s also used by brands like Adidas to market new products and reward young athletes with giveaways and prizes.

National Memorial Day Choral Festival

There will be many concerts held throughout the weekend, but the Memorial Day Choral Festival at the Kennedy Center is one of the most prominent. The festival is billed as a “joint venture by the American Veterans Center and Music Celebrations International to attract greater attention to the true meaning of the Memorial Day Holiday.” This year’s event takes place on Saturday, May 27 beginning at 2:00 PM. The festival will feature 8 choirs from across the country as well as the U.S. Air Force orchestra.

Jeremy’s Run

Jeremy Glass was only 20 years old when he passed away from complications stemming from drug abuse. Jeremy’s Run is held each year on Memorial Day to honor his memory and others who have passed away from drug addiction. All funds raised from the races benefit the Jeremy Glass Memorial Scholarship Fund, the Partnership For Drug Free Kids, and MedStar Montgomery’s Addiction and Mental Health Services Outreach Program. The race takes place on May 29 at The Fair Hill Shopping Center in Olney and includes a 5K, 10K, and 1-mile fun run, as well as activities like raffles, food, DJs, and a kids zone with activities for children.
